5 Hut Itineraries in the Dolomites Trekking with Map

ive mountain huts, one loop, and the most famous krapfen in the Dolomites Everyone stops at Passo Sella. They get out of the car, take a photo of the Sassolungo massif, grab a krapfen, and drive away. But just a hundred meters beyond that wooden snack stand, a trail begins that very few people follow—a route linking five mountain huts in a spectacular loop through alpine meadows, cascading streams, and towering rock walls. The trail is called the Friedrich August Weg (CAI Trail 557). It was inaugurated in 1911 and dedicated to King Frederick Augustus III of Saxony, the last King of Saxony, who fell in love with these mountains. More than a century later, you can still walk the very same path he once hiked, beneath the imposing Sassolungo massif, with the Marmolada glacier watching from across the valley. Although there are no technical sections, this isn't an easy stroll. Expect constant ups and downs at high altitude, a fairly long distance, and mountain weather that can change its mind in less than half an hour.
