Diga Contra
The wall stands 220 metres tall and dams the river Verzasca at the mouth of the valley. This is where James Bond throws himself into the void in the opening scene of GoldenEye — the jump is real and still bookable, though just leaning over the parapet gives you the idea.
Beneath the surface of the reservoir lie the old valley road and the remains of Pioda, the hamlet submerged when the basin was filled.
Mind how you fit it into the day: the dam is not on the walking route along the Sentierone, it is a separate stop to budget for on the bus loop. Many keep it for the way back, ending the day here rather than in Lavertezzo.
- Bus stop: Diga Verzasca, on the PostBus line up the valley.
- When: early morning light rakes into the gorge; by late afternoon the wall is in shadow.
- With the Ticino Ticket the ride is free, so stopping here costs nothing extra.
